Bringing home a new kitten: the first two weeks

Austin summers are hard on dogs. They cool down mainly by panting, which does not work well when the air itself is hot and humid.
Walk early or late
Aim for before 8am and after 8pm. If the pavement is too hot for the back of your hand for seven seconds, it is too hot for paws.
Know the signs of heatstroke
Heavy panting, drooling, bright red gums, wobbling and vomiting are all warning signs. Move your dog somewhere cool, wet them with cool (not ice-cold) water and call us straight away.
Never leave a dog in a parked car, even with the windows down. The inside can reach 120°F in 20 minutes.
Flat-faced breeds need extra care
Bulldogs, pugs and French bulldogs overheat much faster. Keep exercise short and gentle.
