Understanding your blood pressure numbers

Understanding your blood pressure numbers

Blood pressure is written as two numbers, such as 120/80. Here's what they mean.

The top number

Systolic pressure: the pressure in your arteries when your heart beats.

The bottom number

Diastolic pressure: the pressure when your heart rests between beats.

One high reading isn't a diagnosis. Your doctor will look at several readings over time.

Simple habits that help

Regular activity, less salt, limiting alcohol, not smoking and good sleep can all support healthy blood pressure.

This article is general information, not medical advice. Please speak to your doctor about your own readings. If you have severe headache, chest pain or shortness of breath, call 911.
