What I learned in my first three years as a freelancer

Three years ago I left a comfortable agency job to work for myself. Here is what I wish someone had told me.

Price the problem, not the hours

My first quotes were hourly and I lost money on every fast project. Now I price the outcome and agree the scope in writing.

Say no early

The projects I regret all started with a small voice saying 'this isn't right'. I listen to it now.

Empty space in the calendar is not a problem. It's where the good ideas come from.

Keep one day for yourself

Fridays are for side projects, learning and long walks. My best client work usually starts there.
